Dog tear staining is caused by too much tearing from the nasolacrimal ducts.  When this happens, brownish-red stains underneath the eyes can be observed.  There are a number of reasons for dog tear staining including breed, genetics, yeast overgrowth, infection, poor diet, and allergies.  This occurrence is most identifiable in dogs with white or light colored coats.  Breeds with darker fur usually exhibit immoderate itching, watery eyes, and more than normal tearing.  Bacteria and yeast prefer to grow and breed in damp facial hair and face staining can occur.  Reddish tears are indicative of the excessive growth of yeast, the most common of which is Ptyrosporin or “Red Yeast.”  This case is best addressed by making improvements on your pet’s nutrition.  Giving it probiotics can aid in eliminating the growth of yeast.

As mentioned, dog tear staining can be brought about by allergies.  A dog with allergy typically has itchy, irritated, watery eyes.  The environment the dog is in is quite important in avoiding allergy attacks.  Also, grooming and bathing products used on dogs can also contribute to allergies.   Some dog shampoos contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the eyes and may result to more than usual tearing.  Allergy in food can also cause a inflammatory reaction that consequently alter the pH of body fluids.  This in turn may lead to excessive tearing and staining.  Look for formulae that are rich in antioxidants, like beta-carotene, selenium, vitamin C, and vitamin E.  Antioxidants are very helpful in fight the large amount of free radicals produced during inflammation.

There are people who recommend products that contain tylosin or tartrate to address dog tear staining.  It should be noted, however, that although tylosin as an antibiotic is effective for short term use, it definitely is not good for use over an extended period of time.  Tylosin has been associated with the following adverse effects: vomiting, diarrhea, and other intestinal problems.  In addition, bacteria may develop resistance to this drug when used improperly.  Harmful side effects of tylosin range from mild to severe.

If you do not want to resort to tear stain removals that are antibiotic based, it is necessary to improve the immune system of your dog.  The use of probiotics is highly advised as it does not have negative side effects.  Double the probiotics dosage for a week, then revert to the regular amount after.  This is necessary to introduce good, live microorganisms to your dog’s digestive system.  It is also a great way to tackle the overgrowth of yeast in your pet’s nasolacrimal duct.  Vitamin and health supplements also aid in boosting your dog’s immune system.  Make sure that its diet is rich in antioxidants to lend a hand in fighting free radicals.

A veterinarian can also recommend a mild dog shampoo if dog tear staining is caused by irritation or allergies.  It is also advised to know the allergens your pet is hypersensitive to.  It is possible that the dog is allergic to certain types of food, cigarette smoke, and other factors in the environment.  Avoid these irritants and excessive tearing is eliminated.
