Nature’s Variety, an independent pet food company located in St. Louis, Missouri and Lincoln, Nebraska, declared a voluntary recall.

On February of this year, one batch of Nature’s Variety’s Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula with a “Best if Used By” date 10/04/2013 was pulled out from the market because pieces of clear plastic can be present in some bags of the dog food. These pieces of plastic may cause possible choking risk to dogs.

According to the report, the source for the pieces of plastic found in some bags of Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula has already been identified and that the issue has been resolved. The recall has been confirmed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) on the 15th of February 2013. The bulletin has not been distributed via email until the 19th of February 2013.

The products affected by the voluntary recall made by Nature’s Variety is strictly limited to a single batch of Organic Chicken Formula with the “Best if Used By” of date of 10/04/13. This date can be viewed on the back of the package just below the “Contact Us” section. The products included in the recall are as follows:

Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula patties – 6 lbs. bag

Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula patties – 36 lbs. case

Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula medallions – 3 lbs. bag

Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula medallions – 27 lbs. Case

The recalled products were distributed throughout the retails stores as well as online sales all throughout the US and Canada but no other products were affected. The company acted upon the potential issue after receiving a complaint from its customer. Immediately, the source of issue was identified and addressed. The potential issue was quickly resolved and until now no harmful damage to dogs or cats has been reported.

For customers who have been feeding their pets with the affected product, they should discontinue its use and their pet’s health should be monitored. In case there is any concern or you notice any problem after giving the product to your pet, contact the veterinarian as soon as possible. If you have purchased the affected product, you can definitely have a full refund or an exchange. All you have to do is to return the product to its original packaging. Or you may also bring a proof of purchase to your retailer.
